Ready for more? Here is 8 more of the best teams from baseball's great history. History's Best of the Best 12.
🕰️ History’s Best of the Best 12 invites you on another epic journey through time—eight cities, eight unforgettable teams, and a century’s worth of baseball drama, grit, and glory.
We begin in 1917 Chicago, where the White Sox ruled the American League with 100 wins and a World Series crown. Led by Eddie Collins, Red Faber, and Eddie Cicotte, this powerhouse squad dominated both at the plate and on the mound, setting the stage for a dynasty that would be forever altered by scandal just two years later.
Next, we travel to Darby, Pennsylvania in 1925, home of the Hilldale Club. Champions of the Eastern Colored League, Hilldale featured three future Hall of Famers—Biz Mackey, Judy Johnson, and Louis Santop—and toppled the mighty Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro League World Series. Their triumph remains a cornerstone of Negro League excellence.
Then it’s off to Fenway Park in 1941, where Ted Williams etched his name into immortality by batting .406—the last .400 season in MLB history. Surrounded by legends like Jimmie Foxx, Bobby Doerr, and Joe Cronin, the Red Sox lit up scoreboards and hearts in a season that became a symbol of perfection.
We jump to 1969 Chicago, where the Cubs—led by Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, and Fergie Jenkins—held first place for 155 days before heartbreak struck. Their collapse remains one of the most dramatic in baseball lore, but their talent and charisma made Wrigley Field the center of the baseball universe that summer.
In 1971, Oakland erupted with swagger and dominance. Vida Blue won both the Cy Young and MVP, while Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter helped the A’s notch 101 wins and their first postseason berth since 1931. The Swingin’ A’s era was about to begin.
Then it’s 1989 San Francisco, where the Giants, led by Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, and the inspirational Dave Dravecky, captured the NL pennant. Though swept in the earthquake-marred World Series, their resilience and fire made them unforgettable.
We land in sunny San Diego in 1998, where Tony Gwynn’s sweet swing, Greg Vaughn’s 50 homers, and Trevor Hoffman’s 53 saves powered the Padres to a 98-win season and a trip to the World Series. Though they fell to the Yankees, their run was one of the franchise’s finest.
Finally, we arrive in Queens in 2000, where the Mets—featuring Mike Piazza, Edgardo Alfonzo, and Al Leiter—battled their way to a Subway Series showdown with the Yankees. Though they came up short, their grit and flair made them legends in Shea Stadium’s final golden hour.
⚾ From Black Sox to Big Apple, from barnstormers to bombers—this set is a tribute to the teams that defined eras, broke barriers, and captured imaginations. Collect the legends. Relive the moments. Travel through time with the Best of the Best.
