History's Best of the Best 13
Ready for more? Here is 8 more of the best teams from baseball's great history. History's Best of the Best 13.
🕰️ History’s Best of the Best 13 sends you on another unforgettable journey through baseball’s past—eight cities, eight eras, and eight teams whose stories shaped the game we love.
We begin in 1927 Atlantic City, where the Giants of the Eastern Colored League thrilled crowds with the power of Dick Lundy and the brilliance of Luther Farrell, two Negro League icons whose talent helped define an era of explosive, barnstorming baseball.
From there, we travel to Washington, D.C. in 1933, where the Nationals—led by the legendary pitching duo of General Crowder and Earl Whitehill, along with the bat of Heinie Manush—captured the AL pennant and brought World Series baseball back to the capital for the first time since Walter Johnson’s glory days.
Next, we arrive in wartime St. Louis, 1944, where the Browns shocked the baseball world by winning their only AL pennant. Vern Stephens’ bat and Jack Kramer’s arm carried a franchise long overshadowed by its crosstown rivals, making their Cinderella run one of the most improbable in MLB history.
Then it’s on to 1968, where the Cardinals—powered by Bob Gibson’s historic 1.12 ERA season, Lou Brock’s blazing speed, and Orlando Cepeda’s presence in the lineup—stood at the center of the “Year of the Pitcher,” dominating the National League with precision and
swagger.
Our next stop is Queens in 1973, where the “Ya Gotta Believe” Mets stunned the baseball world. Tom Seaver, Tug McGraw, and Rusty Staub led a late-season surge that carried New York from last place to the World Series, becoming one of the most beloved underdog stories in baseball history.
Then we head to the Astrodome in 1980, where the Houston Astros—featuring Nolan Ryan’s fire, José Cruz’s consistency, and Joe Niekro’s knuckleball—won their first-ever division title in a season defined by tension, talent, and unforgettable playoff drama.
We jump to Atlanta in 1998, where the Braves’ dynasty reached full power. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz formed one of the greatest pitching trios ever assembled, while Chipper Jones delivered an MVP season that helped Atlanta win 106 games and dominate the National League.
Finally, we land in Chicago in 2005, where the White Sox—driven by Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, Jermaine Dye, and a lights-out bullpen—stormed through October with an 11–1 postseason record, ending an 88‑year championship drought and cementing their place in baseball lore.
⚾ From Atlantic City to Chicago, from barnstormers to dynasties—this
set is a time machine built for the true baseball historian.
